Verucchio

This delightful place is known as the “Cradle of the Malatestas”, the noble family who owned this large expanse during the medieval period. On these lands castles and fortresses were built, for the protection of feudal property and display of power.
The town of Verucchio was of great historical importance, even before the arrival of the Malatestas, as recent archaeological discoveries have brought to light many necropolis from the Villanovian period, a former village of the Etruscans.

Verucchio

A historic town, a must
for cyclists in the region

This delightful place is known as the “Cradle of the Malatestas”, the noble family who owned this large expanse during the medieval period. On these lands castles and fortresses were built, for the protection of feudal property and display of power.
The town of Verucchio was of great historical importance, even before the arrival of the Malatestas, as recent archaeological discoveries have brought to light many necropolis from the Villanovian period, a former village of the Etruscans. All this gave rise to one of the world’s most important museums: priceless items, gold and amber jewelry, in addition to well kept more perishable items such as wood and vinyl baskets, dated 7th and 11th centuries BC.
We will bike among hills and history, tasting the local cuisine from a fine restaurant where it is possible to visit their old cave where wines are conserved.

TOURISM
Visit the Malatestian Stronghold – Rocca Malatestiana – (11th to 16th century), high above the city, dominating the entire plain thus affording a panoramic view of the area. The Civic Archaeological Museum, inside a medieval monastery of the Order of Saint Augustine,
contains all the articles found in the necropolis of the Villanovian town.
Historical section: worth a leisurely hike around the village, among narrow streets and lovely arches.
Shops: it is possible to find delicious local food specialties and renown great wines in the main square. Nearby it is possible to visit other small towns and villages
where tourism is still almost unknown, and where you can enjoy a far different Italy, unlike the typical sites.
